The news of Fernando Alonso missing the Monaco Grand Prix as he races at Indianapolis has Jenson Button fans hoping their man will step in to replace the Spaniard.

McLaren and Alonso have already confirmed that the latter's trip to the US will be a one-off affair after which he shall resume his normal F1 driving duties with McLaren- Honda.

Button is still contracted to McLaren, although as more of a brand ambassador than an active driver, but his role does include the ability to be called upon by his employer if necessary.

The team's official test and development drivers include Oliver Turvey, Nobuharu Matsushita and Nyck De Vries but neither of the youngsters, as talented as they may be, boast the credentials to fling a McLaren-Honda around the twisty streets of Monte-Carlo.

For Button however, who still hones his fitness on a daily basis in his new California home, with the exception of a warm-up session, the challenge is certainly within his reach.

"Bring Jenson back!" the fans are yelling...
