Renault brings upgrade to US GP

Renault is set to provide Red Bull Racing with a substantial engine upgrade in Austin, should the British team choose to use it.

It is understood that the French manufacturer has now exploited a large part of its outstanding 12 token allocation to increase the specification of its power unit.

While Renault is making the upgrade available, the decision to use it will depend solely on Red Bull. But any change will result in a grid penalty as both Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat have exceed their engine allocations. Furthermore, sister team Toro Rosso will not have access to the upgrade next weekend.

It is understood Renault's updates have been focused on the internal combustion engine, with changes also made to the turbo while the new power unit spec has been successfully validated on the manufacturers' dyno.

Renault believes its initiative will help it move forward with its 2016 plans in its quest to bridge the gap with rivals Mercedes and Ferrari.
