Verstappen clocked in with a 1:41.829 around the Marina Bay circuit, edging out Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel by 0.072s and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton by 0.142s.

Vettel clipped the wall on the exit of Turn 21 but with very little damage fortunately.

The same could not be said for Marcus Ericsson however as the Swede brought out the red flag with less than 30 minutes to go when he spun his Sauber into the wall on the exit of Turn 19.

As drivers picked up the pace in the closing stages of the late afternoon session the flood lights were turned on and McLaren celebrated its divorce with Honda with a bout of irony, putting both its drivers among the top-five, with Fernando Alonso finishing P4 and Stoffel Vandoorne hot on his heels in P5.
