Tech F1i: A closer look at the Haas VF-17

COMPLEX AIRFLOW STRUCTURE

The bargeboard is flanked by a flap sitting a low level (white arrow). Unlike the similar element seen on the Ferrari, the Haas design only connects to a protrusion of the floor from the rear (yellow arrow).

Another singular component is the triangular winglet that attaches to the chassis right underneath the US flag. Taken on its own, its profile, which looks like that of an airplane wing, suggests the element creates lift instead of downforce.

In fact, the role of the winglet is part of a wider and complex airflow structure whereby the wing interacts with the aero parts placed ahead and behind. Besides, its delta wing shape is likely to produce a vortex on its edges, which could energise the airflow in the undercut sidepod area.
