Tech F1i: A closer look at the Ferrari SF70H

LOOKING TO BREAK THE NEGATIVE SPIRAL

Ferrari’s front and rear wings seem to be prototype, or at least temporary, versions for the launch car. Unlike other cars, the rear wing endplates do not feature open-end slits for instance. Also worth noticing is the double rear wing mounting pillar

On the power unit front, it is believed that Maranello engineers have copied Mercedes’ split-turbo design, which presents several advantages. A double cooling package, featuring an air-to-water radiator and air-to-air intercooler, would have been retained.

Despite Ferrari going through a major restructuring last summer following Allison and De Beer’s departures, the SF70H still faces the daunting task of eclipsing its winless predecessor, which showed flashes of speed but remained hard to fully exploit.

Company boss Sergio Marchionne has kept a low profile this winter – after creating high expectations 12 months ago –, but the pressure to deliver is definitely on for Ferrari and former engine boss Mattia Binotto, whose promotion to the role of technical director has been questioned.
