Tech F1i: A closer look at the Ferrari SF70H

REMEMBER 2008

The new Ferrari nosecone is evidently larger than the Mercedes model. The tip has not changed much compared to last year’s SF16-H, though an ‘S’-duct has appeared under nose. Last time Ferrari used a similar system was back in 2008.

Ferrari’s ‘S’-duct is very close to last year’s Mercedes solution with two inlets on each side of the lower nose area and the outlet on the front bulkhead behind the Pitot tube.

One can notice the particular shape of the turning vanes that lean on the chassis (see yellow arrows). While Ferrari aerodynamicists stuck to conventional designs in recent years, this cautious philosophy does not apply on their latest creation.

Level with the 'S'-duct outlet are two winglets attached to the chassis, with a third element guiding the airflow towards the aforementioned vane thanks to its tilted profile.
