While Vandoorne was, once again, no match for Alonso, he did qualify reasonably well with the improved McLaren. He got a solid getaway off the line before short-cutting turn two, for which he was penalized five seconds. Down on power, he desperately tried to overtake Stroll and Ericsson when his gearbox gave way.
