Ferrari thought they had done enough on Saturday until Bottas put in a late flyer to edge out Vettel by 0.038s and achieve his third pole of the season. This was a golden opportunity for the Finn to prove to the Mercedes hierarchy that he too can get the job done, but he mucked up his start and couldn’t take the fight to Vettel.
