From F1 to Indy: a crossover of diverse fortunes

Jackie Stewart

The compatriot we mentioned before is none other than Jackie Stewart, n°43 in this photo. In his first oval experience in 1966 he too drove a Lola, entered by the John Mecom team. The Scotsman qualified 11th but then proceeded to run figurative circles around the rest of the field in the second half of the race. With ten laps to go he had close to a full lap advantage when he parked his car on the grass with an oil pressure problem. He was credited with 6th place and was voted “Rookie of the Year” ahead of Hill who won the race, but only led the final 10 laps ! Stewart returned a year later without success.
