From F1 to Indy: a crossover of diverse fortunes

Graham Hill

It was in this Lola-Ford that Hill Sr., while being a BRM driver in F1, competed in the 50th Indy 500 in 1966. Graham qualified just 15th but a massive pile-up eliminated ten cars on the opening lap. While being dominated by a young compatriot (see next page), Hill inherited the victory. On this day he became the only winner of the mythical Triple Crown with a world title, the Borg Warner Trophy and 24-Hours of Le Mans glory. Like Clark, the engine in his Lotus gave up the ghost in 67. In 68 he started from the front row but crashed the Lotus 56 Turbine.
