From F1 to Indy: a crossover of diverse fortunes

Alberto Ascari

Like Farina, Ascari was part of the 1952 Ferrari adventure with this 375 F1, which had its chassis rigidified and wheelbase lengthened (hence the “Special” on the engine cover). After passing the rookie test with flying colours, he qualified 19th at 216.147kph. The Milan native started strong and was 8th after 40 laps when a wheel exploded bringing his Indy to an end. Alberto was scheduled to run the next year in the same car, but the Scuderia cancelled the trip.
