Schumi’s fiery Austrian Grand Prix win

AT, F1, Start des Rennens

Before returning to the F1 calendar in 2014, Austria had last hosted a grand prix in 2003 on what was then called the A1-Ring. Starting from pole position that year was Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher, who led the opening stages of the race before suffering a small fire during his first pit stop. The German and his team managed to keep their cool to carry on going though they lost a handful of seconds in the mishap. Having slipped behind McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen and Williams’ Juan Pablo Montoya, Schumi saw his title rivals suffer engine problems on the same lap and duly swept past the pair of them to reclaim a lead he would never relinquish again.
