Ronnie Peterson died on this day in 1978, following a heavy crash at the start of the Italian Grand Prix. Peterson suffered severe leg injuries in the accident and was taken to hospital in Milan where he was operated on for more than six hours, but his condition worsened overnight and he died the morning after the race. With ten victories, Peterson remains Sweden's most successful F1 driver.
